Lopetegui is thought to have rejected Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting Lisbon, in order to reach an initial two-year agreement.
The Hammers may hold off on making his appointment official in order to show their respect for departing manager David Moyes.
Bayern Munich and AC Milan were also keeping an eye on former Real Madrid and Wolves manager Lopetegui.
However, it appears that his transfer to the London Stadium will go through after a verbal agreement was reached earlier this week.
The Spaniard who will take Moyes’ position is rumored to have been pursued by West Ham owner David Sullivan personally.
This is true even though it’s believed that club icon Mark Noble and sporting director Tim Steidten want Amorim to be the next captain.
After leading the team for four and a half years, Moyes was set to leave on Monday, according to the announcement.
The Hammers also declared in that statement that they would “make no further comment until a new appointment is confirmed.”
Given that Lopetegui is completing the last elements of his new contract, such confirmation may be forthcoming.
Almost a year after quitting his position at Wolves prior to the start of the current campaign, Lopetegui is returning to the Premier League.
Although he hasn’t had a work since leaving the West Midlands, West Ham thinks he’s the appropriate candidate for the position.
However, Scott Minto, a former player for the Hammers, has questions about the boss.
“I have to be honest with you, I’m not overly enamored by the decision, if that is going to be the decision,” Minto stated to talkSPORT.
I’ve stated on talkSPORT several times that I dislike discussing managers while David Moyes is still in charge. However, whatever of your opinion of his playing philosophy, I’ve watched a lot of West Ham this season, and I do get what the supporters are saying.
“You look at the Arsenal game; that’s a nice example because you played against Arsenal, but it was more of a sit-back game at home from the start.
The supporters would rather watch you try your hardest rather than do that.
“But, if you look at Lopetegui, he’s very well organised and very well structured, but he’s not the anti-David Moyes the fans are looking for.”
