The NFL has sparked a wave of discussion after fans at the Buffalo Bills–Detroit Lions game stood for the Canadian national anthem, adding an unusual moment to an already highly anticipated matchup.
With the game taking place in Buffalo, New York, just a short distance from the Canadian border, the decision to include “O Canada” was tied to the close connection between the region and its neighbors across the border.
For many fans in attendance, however, hearing the Canadian anthem before an NFL game on American soil came as an unexpected sight.
The moment quickly became a talking point, particularly among spectators who questioned why a Canadian anthem was being played at an NFL game involving two American teams.
