News: Newcastle United’s Knee Crisis Deepens with 3rd Major Blow – Fans In Panic
Newcastle United’s season has been characterized by injuries, and not just to the playing team! Goalkeeping coach Shwan Jalal has suffered major damage to his knee.
Recently, the defense duo of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles were sidelined for six to nine months due to ACL injuries. Jalal, a Stockport County native who joined Eddie Howe’s backroom squad in October 2022, suffered the problem during United’s training camp in Dubai last month due to the warm weather.
It is believed that the 40-year-old will not play until the preseason, at which point head of goalkeeping Adam Bartlett will be temporarily covered by former Magpies goalkeeper Tony Caig.
After serving as a coach at Carlisle United, Hartlepool United, and Livingston, Caig—who was a backup to Shay Given and Steve Harper during the Sir Bobby Robson era—returned to Newcastle two years ago as head of the academy goalkeeping department.
In addition to planning, organizing, and supervising the academy’s entire goalkeeping program from the youngest age, his typical responsibilities include playing a key part in the development of the club’s under-23 goalkeepers. However, Caig will assume some first-team duties in Jalal’s absence.
Prior to kickoff during last week’s Premier League games against West Ham United, Everton, and Fulham, Caig and Bartlett were seen warming up Martin Dubravka and company on the field.
With seven games left in the season, the Magpies are trying to qualify for Europe. Additionally, Caig might have the chance to practice alongside England international Nick Pope, the starting goalie, as the latter hopes to make a comeback from a shoulder injury later this month.
