Newcastle Winger Anthony Gordon Issues Strong Warning to VAR Over Penalty Denial in Manchester United Loss
Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle, has added his voice to the VAR discussion by giving the Premier League a deadline. Gordon thinks VAR should be eliminated if it won’t improve after the Magpies’ 3-2 loss to Manchester United on Wednesday night, when they were denied a penalty.
At a meeting next month, elite teams will decide whether to do away with the VAR system for the 2024–2025 season. In order for the proposal to be approved, 14 teams must vote in favor. And after Newcastle was down 1-0 in the first half when a penalty ruling went against them, England international Gordon isn’t sure if it should stay.
The 23-year-old ducked inside the box, where Sofyan Amrabat grabbed him by the Achilles, shoving the former Everton player to the ground.
Gordon was left with an enormous hole in the back of his sock, but he was shocked to see that VAR had not sent referee Rob Jones to the pitchside monitor.
Gordon also took to Sky Sports to quickly express his frustration after the thrilling five-goal match that dropped Newcastle to seventh position, level on points with United in eighth place going into the final weekend of the season.
“[My ankle is] extremely sore,” he stated. I’m not sure if my ankle will hold up well. But after seeing the incident again, I can see that there was a penalty. I don’t worry if the referee makes a mistake on the field because it’s a tough call and things move fast.
However, given that VAR is meant to rectify errors, I fail to see its purpose. After pushing me in the back and going down my Achilles tendon, Casemiro arrives and retrieves the ball.
However, there were already two fouls, so in all honesty, I don’t understand the need. “I was fouled right away, so I decided to wait for the VAR to verify instead of appealing.
I don’t mind the referee not awarding it because it happened quickly. “You see me saying to my teammates, ‘Don’t worry, it’s a penalty,’ and then we continue playing, and I’m thinking to myself, ‘How is it possible that I have no socks left?'” “I don’t understand the point of it, I really don’t.”
Gordon made the following statement when asked if he thought VAR should be eliminated: “It’s a big decision, I’m actually quite fond of it.”
Though I think the principle is good, there are always too many blunders and it doesn’t seem to work in the league. We may lead 1-0 [equal at 1-1] and then the game shifts, but we’ve lost too many opportunities to place the blame elsewhere.
“You can either get better or get rid of it since it’s a plain and evident mistake; I don’t know how you could get it wrong. It’s really easy.” In his post-match press conference, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his equally disbelieving side’s lack of a penalty kick, saying, “Stonewall penalty.”
“I don’t know why VAR didn’t get involved.” Because of this, Newcastle needs to win all three points away at Brentford on Sunday in order to ensure a spot in the top seven and, at the very least, Europa Conference League football. In addition, Chelsea would qualify for the Europa League at their expense if they lost to Bournemouth at home.
