Two West Ham United players have received special recognition from Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso after his team eliminated the Premier League team from the Europa League on Thursday.
After drawing 1-1 at the London Stadium, Alonso’s team moved to the last four with a 3-1 aggregate victory in the Europa League quarterfinal first leg.
Michail Antonio gave the Hammers the lead, but Jeremie Frimpong’s late strike made sure the Bundesliga winners would not lose.
After the game, Alonso spoke, calling Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta of West Ham, two outstanding, physically gifted players.
“West Ham has talented players and enthusiasm.” Bravo to them; their performance was far superior to that of Leverkusen, Alonso told TNT Sports.
It’s not always possible to have control for the full ninety minutes, so you have to deal with the tough times. We needed to avoid giving up that second or third goal.
