Just In: Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan garners yet another accolade in his stellar season with the London Knights
Amidst a star-studded season in the Ontario Hockey League, Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has been named to the OHL’s first all-star team, announced Tuesday.
In a season that has seen the London Knights win a J. Ross Robertson Cup Title, sweeping three out of their four series en route to it, the club produced a franchise record seven players named to the OHL all-star and all-rookie teams.
Playing Junior B with the Kompoka Kings just two seasons ago, leaving many quick to criticize the Leafs’ selection, Cowan was drafted by the organization in the first round (28th overall) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and has since then, been playing on another level this season in the OHL – completely quieting the critics.
Highlighted by an impressive 36-game point streak (42 games if you include the postseason), the longest point streak since Bill Bowler in 1994-95, Cowan had a career-high 96 points in 54 regular season games, surpassing his 53-point total in 2022-23. Due to his stellar play, the right-winger was awarded the Ontario Hockey League’s Red Tilson Trophy for the Most Outstanding Player.
In the postseason, Cowan finished the playoffs with 10 goals and 24 assists in 18 games, earning himself the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award for the playoff’s Most Valuable Player – the first to win both the regular season and postseason MVP since Mitch Marner did it in 2016.
Currently on a run in search of obtaining the Memorial Cup, Cowan and the Knights sit at a 2-0-0-0 record as the Mount Brydges, Ontario, native, has two points in two games thus far. The club face off in a rematch of the OHL Western Conference Final against the Saginaw Spirit on Wednesday. In a series that saw the Knights emerge victorious, by a series score of 4-2, this time around, the stakes are even higher – a trip to the Memorial Cup Final is on the line.
