Breaking News: Buffalo Bills Left in Limbo Waiting for Micah Hyde’s Decision

Micah Hyde, a veteran safety for the Buffalo Bills, is a free agent who hasn’t decided if he wants to play another season or retire. The door is still open for a possible return to Buffalo, if only marginally.

Although the Buffalo Bills have established critical components at safety, they haven’t “shut the door” on a possible comeback by Micah Hyde. General manager of the Bills Brandon Beane stated, “We definitely wouldn’t shut the door to ever bringing a Micah Hyde back, if he decides to play,” at the league meetings in Orlando late last month.

The 33-year-old Hyde, who is free to leave the team at any time, may decide to come back or retire. Hyde, who spent seven of his eleven NFL seasons as a Bill, has recently been dealing with neck issues. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do when we spoke after the season.

He was going to consider it and continue to discuss it. “I’m not sure if he’s made a final decision in either case,” Beane remarked. Since speaking with Micah, I’ve spoken with his representative.

He hasn’t, in my opinion, closed the door yet. It’s probably still open. Since Sean McDermott became head coach of Buffalo in 2017, Hyde has been a vital member of the team’s defense.

Hyde has totaled 16 interceptions during 95 regular season starts for the Bills, garnering him recognition as a two-time All-Pro Second Team member. Beane was involved in the safeties room trade on the transaction wire as Hyde’s career was coming to an end.

The Bills signed free agency Mike Edwards away from the Kansas City Chiefs, the winners of the Super Bowl, and re-signed Taylor Rapp, who made 16 appearances in 2023. Both versatile defensive back Cam Lewis and backup Damar Hamlin are under contract for two more years each.

“Now that Taylor is back, I think he performed admirably in his capacity last year and demonstrated his compatibility with our DNA. It was a great move by Kansas City to acquire Mike Edwards, who we thought was excellent a year ago. Those two men in addition to getting Damar back. Damar will be included because it will have been a year since what we know about him.

Additionally, Beane stated, “We think Cam Lewis is a really versatile player who can play nickel, safety for us, and special teams.” “Right now we have those guys, and we wouldn’t close the door if there’s another opportunity to add someone, free agency or the draft.”

If the seasoned veteran decides to continue playing and both sides can agree on a fair compensation arrangement, that someone might be Hyde.

It would obviously need to fit within the cap “explained Beane. “I won’t play for less than [this] sum, even if he says I’ll play for Buffalo or another team. In order for us to make it work, it would still need to fit within the business plan.”

Voluntary offseason workouts begin this week, and the Bills seem content to wait and watch how Hyde develops.
