Super League 2026: Castleford Tigers boss Danny McGuire sees promising signs for future in press conference
Castleford Tigers head coach Danny McGuire believes his side is heading in the right direction after a string of encouraging performances in the opening rounds of the 2026 Super League season. Speaking to the media following their narrow 22-18 win over Huddersfield Giants, McGuire praised his squad’s development and signalled that brighter days lie ahead for the club.
“We’re not the finished article, not by a long stretch,” McGuire admitted. “But what I’m seeing from the boys in terms of attitude, work rate, and commitment – that’s the foundation of something special. There’s belief building within the group and that’s what excites me.”
The Tigers, who endured a challenging campaign in 2025, have shown marked improvement this season, with young players stepping up and experienced heads guiding the squad through tight contests. The victory over Huddersfield marked their third win in five matches – already matching their win tally at the same point last year.
One of the most promising aspects for McGuire has been the emergence of Castleford’s youth talent. Players such as fullback Max Jowitt and halfback George Hill have impressed with their creativity and maturity under pressure.
“George is growing into that playmaker role every week,” said McGuire. “He’s fearless, and he’s learning to control the tempo of a game – something you don’t see often in lads his age.”
Veteran forward Joe Westerman echoed his coach’s sentiments, highlighting the changing atmosphere in the dressing room.
“There’s a buzz now,” Westerman said. “Everyone’s buying into what Danny’s bringing to the table. Training’s intense, standards are higher, and we’re seeing the results out on the field.”
Castleford fans, too, are beginning to sense a turning point. The Jungle was packed for their recent fixtures, with supporters vocally backing the team through every minute.
McGuire was quick to acknowledge the supporters’ role in the club’s revival: “The fans have been incredible. They stuck with us through tough times and now they’re helping to drive us forward. We want to repay that loyalty with performances that make them proud.”
As the 2026 season begins to take shape, the early signs suggest that under Danny McGuire’s leadership, Castleford Tigers are building something worth watching.
