Shocking Exit: 4 Wigan Warriors Players Set to Leave
Wigan Warriors have been the standout team in the Super League so far this season. The Cherry and Whites sit four points clear at the top of the table having lost just two games all season and they have a game in hand on their rivals, too.
Matt Peet’s side aren’t expected to be too busy when it comes to recruitment for next season, but there will be some turnover in personnel and they have some tough decisions to make. Here’s a look at the four players who could be set to leave the club at the end of the season as they approach the end of their current deals.
Willie Isa Wigan Warriors Super League
The 35-year-old has been with Wigan since 2016 and has now made over 200 career appearances for the club. During that time he has won three Super League rings, one Challenge Cup, two World Club Challenges and two League Leaders’ Shields.
It’s been quite the career for the second-rower and whatever happens at the end of the season, Isa will likely go down as one of the club’s most reliable overseas players ever. Isa can still do it at the top level, his recent performances for Wigan underline that, and it seems as though he will be given the time to make his own decision come the end of the campaign.
Mike Cooper Wigan Warriors
Cooper will be 36 by the time this season comes to an end and it’s fair to say he is edging towards concluding what has been a fine career. He’s off contract at the end of the season and whether the club believe he can go around again remains to be seen. The former Warrington man has been with Wigan since July 2022 and penned an extension with the club until the end of the 2024 late last season. Like Isa, given his age and status, much may depend on how Cooper feels as the campaign draws to a close.
Ryan Hampshire kicks for goal in Super League
Hampshire has been a bit-part player since his arrival at the club in 2023, making just five appearances this season. He has scored three tries, though, including a brace against Castleford Tigers in April. The 29-year-old provides Wigan with versatility and depth when needed, but it remains to be seen if the Warriors will have space for him in their squad moving into next season.
Jacob Douglas
Douglas made his first-team debut for the Warriors last month as he lined up for the Cherry and Whites against Warrington and he was included in the squad when Wigan took on London Broncos a couple of weeks ago, too. As such, the winger is still very much at the beginning of his career and Wigan do have the option to extend his deal by another 12 months should they see fit. He’ll be doing all he can to prove his worth and stick around the Brick Community Stadium then over the remainder of the season.
