SAD NEWS: With Great Displeasure, It’s Confirmed Geelong Cats Star Mark O’Connor OUT for Entire AFL Season After Devastating Wrist Surgery
Mark O’Connor will play no part in the remainder of the season for the Geelong Cats after undergoing surgery on a damaged wrist.
The Kerry native, who captained the Kingdom to All-Ireland MFC glory in 2015, has forged out an outstanding career in the AFL since making the switch Down Under in 2016 but a recent operation compounded a frustrating season for the 27-year-old from Dingle.
O’Connor, who along with Geelong club-mate Zach Tuohy famously followed in Tadhg Kennelly’s footsteps as the only Irish players to win a Premiership when the Cats went all the way in 2022, has been a constant feature for the Victoria-based side before injury halted his gallop this term.
O’Connor, who has played a whopping 122 games for Geelong, only featured in 13 first-team games this year and he went under the knife to repair ligament damage with a full recovery expected ahead of pre-season in 2025.
“Mark underwent successful surgery and will take no further part in our finals campaign, we look forward to seeing him back out on the track and ready to go for a full pre-season,” Brett Johnson, Cats Assistant General Manager of Football, said.
O’Connor signed a new deal with Geelong earlier this year that will keep him at the club until at least the end of 2026.
