News: Matty Palmer’s Departure from Swindon Town Proves to Be…
The Magpies had a trying start to the season, plunging sharply out of the play-off spots, but they managed to salvage some much-needed form in their last games, which will provide them impetus heading into Stuart Maynard’s first full season in charge.
However, Matty Palmer, a midfielder, has undoubtedly been missed more than most this season. After suffering an injury in November, the 29-year-old is getting closer to rejoining the team, and his effect since joining the team in 2021 has been greater than you may anticipate.
Palmer began his career at Burton Albion. He played for the Brewers for six years, making over 150 appearances, with the exception of a one-month loan to Oldham Athletic in the middle of the 2015–16 season.
In January 2018, he finalized his transfer to Rotherham United, where he played 14 games and assisted the Millers in winning promotion to the Championship.
Palmer struggled with injuries and making an impact in the first team the next season, appearing in just 13 games across all competitions. However, he managed to secure a loan move to Bradford City, where he made 19 appearances.
After being called back from his loan with the Bantams, the midfield player made another move in the January transfer window, this time to Swindon Town, where he earned a promotion and helped the team win League Two in the 2019–20 season.
Palmer joined Wigan Athletic until January at the beginning of the season, and he would make 26 appearances for the Robins, all of which came in the second part of the season.
When his contract expired at the end of that season, he would quit the team and move to Meadow Lane, bringing with him a lot of Football League experience.
Additionally, the 29-year-old’s outstanding midfield performances have made him a fan favorite during his stay in the East Midlands.
Palmer participated in every game during the Magpies’ 2023 National League championship run, but perhaps most unexpectedly, he started as a substitute in Luke Williams’ first two league starts as the team’s manager.
After putting up some great numbers early in the season, the Derby-born midfielder appeared to be continuing his success as Notts returned to the Football League. However, he sustained a major knee injury in a defeat to Wrexham, which forced him to miss the rest of the season.
Since then, it has been confirmed that the club is looking to bring Palmer back before the new season begins. Given his impact on this team, many believe Palmer’s absence was a major factor in Notts’ decline at the beginning of the current campaign. Palmer, 29, is almost like a new addition.
Notts moved fast to add Dan Gosling as a replacement for Palmer in order to give some midfield consistency before the hectic Christmas season.
However, the Magpies were able to finalize the free transfer of Scott Robertson from Fleetwood Town once the January transfer window opened, and in a relatively short period of time, he has established himself as a fan favorite.
The 22-year-old’s introduction to the team has been much-needed as it brings a unique combination of physicality and grit to the team. He can drive play from midfield and has a wide range of passing skills.
While Jim O’Brien and John Bostock’s contracts expire in the summer, decisions on their futures have not yet been made, it is likely that Notts will have a strong base to build upon if Palmer is healthy enough to begin the new campaign.
