NEWS: Gut-Wrenching Moment, Yeovil Town’s Fisher Devastated Over Missed Equaliser
Alex Fisher of Yeovil Town expressed his “guttedness” at his team’s inability to force a late equalizer against Worthing on Saturday.
With the remaining outcomes as they were, a draw would have been sufficient to win the title despite the Glovers missing a penalty in the second half and having a goal disallowed for offside in the closing moments.
There were several contentious moments during the game, not the least of which was Rhys Murphy’s goal that was disallowed. Fisher acknowledges that it’s difficult to accept.
“It must feel unfair because, although I haven’t seen Murph’s goal reverted, it appeared to be onside from my vantage point. If it is, we have four games remaining with everything on the line, so this will be a difficult decision to make.
On Thursday, we have a great possibility to complete the transaction. “There’s no complacency in the team; we look to go into the final four and try and extract everything out of them that we can. [We need] one point in four games, but you don’t want to just limp over the line though.”
The Glovers controlled the ball well in offensive zones after Fisher cut the lead to 2-1, but they were unable to force the second goal before Worthing’s late sucker punch ended the contest.
You have to play against a squad that is respectable, skilled with the ball, and knows how to win a game even when they are under duress. I believe we had the ball in some dangerous positions. I must admit that I am devastated that we were unable to secure the second, even though there was ample time remaining.
If not for the final five minutes, we essentially achieved the outcome that the attendance today deserved, therefore I wouldn’t characterize it as frustration but rather as a strong desire to please the supporters.
A few minutes into the second half, the Bagsman saw his penalty kick saved. The front man then said that he would support Murphy to score from the spot in circumstances of extreme pressure.
It seems like a good save and that it’s hitting the side netting, and since Murph is a really composed person, I have no problems with him accepting responsibility for the situation.
I have complete faith in him to perform to the best of his abilities. I believe it demonstrates the true spirit of the person that he stands up and takes it. It would have been great if that had been included, but we still have over 40 minutes to play the game.
From here, the team is looking forward to Thursday in Truro (near Gloucester), where the math is easy. League championship won by one point.
I apologize for sounding a little negative, but after such an amazing game—or could have been—emotions are running high in my head right now.
Still, with one game remaining, you would think we would win the championship in the coming week or two, but we won’t take anything for granted. On Thursday, we’ll play a team that we hope will win the most points.
