“I never saw this coming!” – Swindon Town Key Figure Set to Join Salford City in Shocking Move!
Swindon Town’s Head of Football Jamie Russell is set to depart the club to join Salford City according to Sam Morshead of The Moonraker.
The League Two side are languishing towards the bottom of the table, embroiled in a relegation battle with Carlisle United and Morecambe, having lost to the latter this weekend.
The club parted company with former Lincoln City manager Mark Kennedy at the start of the season, but results under new boss Ian Holloway have not improved.
Swindon have only recorded two wins so far this season and have the lowest goal difference outside of the bottom two, leaving them at risk of dropping out of the EFL next season. Russell has been in charge of the footballing decisions since the departure of Sandro di Michele in 2023 and has overseen the appointment of Micheal Flynn, Mark Kennedy and Ian Holloway as well as the long interim period at the end of last season under Gavin Gunning.
It is reported that the departure is due to him accepting a job at League Two rivals Salford City.
A club in decline
The decline of Swindon Town has been swift. It is not too long ago that the club were looking forward to a play-off campaign under Ben Garner. However, window after window the club have consistently allowed their best players to leave the club and replaced them with players that are not at the same quality or fall into the “project player” category. The issue with the latter is that if there is no consistency in the coaching then there is unlikely to be any serious improvements in the players.
The club have also faced charges and been accused of mismanagement behind the scenes.
The situation is dire, and if they are able to fend off relegation this season, unless something dramatically changes such as a club sale, then I fear it may just be kicking the can down the road.
