In Gavin Gunning Words: Swindon Town’s Missing Piece Finally Found
Nnamdi Ofoborh, according to Gavin Gunning, gave Swindon Town the something extra in his performance against Barrow AFC.
The twenty-four-year-old reached the County Ground before of Town’s match against Notts County, when he entered as a late substitute, and three days later he made his debut at Sutton United. Given the midfielder’s cardiac issues, which led to his departure from Rangers last summer, Gunning had previously stated that he would be cautious with him.
However, he has now started the player in back-to-back games and even saw him play the entire 90 minutes at the SO Legal Stadium.
The former midfielder for Bournemouth put on a great show in Cumbria, and the temporary head coach thought he had given Swindon’s game a depth that it had not previously had.
As I have stated, it is not a token; if it weren’t for his previous heart incident, he wouldn’t be here. He had been really sick, but he recovered, and he was lucky to have the kindest people on the planet taking care of him.
“He just adds a different element to our game, so we just need to be happy that we have him.”
Gunning has been open about his hunt for the ideal formation for the club. He has utilized a midfield with a double pivot and an attacking midfielder forward of them most of the time, switching to a back four at first and then back to a back three.
A new midfield configuration resulted from the addition of Ofoborh, a Nigerian youth international who provided more physicality to the midfield by playing as a holding midfielder behind Jake Cain and George McEachran.
“I guess that I have been trying to do it where they fit into my shape,” he remarked. “You have to mold yourself into a shape that suits the players.”
Adding Cain and McEachran to the squad was a great move in my opinion because they are excellent football players with great ball manipulation skills.
“Nnamdi would definitely like to play in one of those two places, but we have been making do with what we have because our roster is where it is right now, especially with Saidou and Dawson out.
“However, I’m only happy with that and the way those three performed today.”
