“Here’s How Pittsburgh Plans to Shut Down Lamar Jackson” – Former Steelers CB Reveals Gameplan
Arthur Maulet was once the slot cornerback blitzing straight at Lamar Jackson in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform. However, Maulet traded in the black and gold for the purple and black after spending 2021 and 2022 with the Steelers. Once they released him, the Ravens snapped Maulet up.
Yet, with all the talk about how the Steelers have Jackson’s number, Maulet knows how the Steelers plan to attack Jackson from all angles. In a press conference on Tuesday, Maulet explained that exact plan.
They’re going to put a person at the dive and they’re going to run a person straight at Lamar,” Maulet said. “And they’re going to make him make a decision. So that’s their gameplan. … Maybe they change [it] a little bit, I ain’t been there in a while. [Jackson] can throw way better now. And he lost a little weight.”
It is not that complicated. The Steelers blitz a lot, but send their edge rushers straight at Jackson while letting the others play the dive player, usually the running back. Behind that, they play a ton of man coverage. It has worked, as Jackson has struggled in many of their matchups.
He is just 2-4 against the Steelers in his career, but no one in the NFL has been better this year against man blitzes than Jackson. Could he have evolved past those weaknesses and will the formula have to change?
That seems likely, especially after the Steelers put the exact plan to slow Jackson down on tape against Jayden Daniels last week.
