GOODNEWS Hits Swindon Town women’s Sports On Yet Another…
Swindon Town Women defeated Purton Women FC 4-0 at The County Ground on Sunday afternoon to win the Wiltshire FA County Women’s Cup trophy.
Last Saturday, Holly Beck-Esson’s early goal, Mia Mugford’s strike, and Tia Rees’ outstanding brace sealed the win for Swindon Town Women.
Holly Beck-Esson beat her player with a deft move and put herself one on one with Purton’s goalkeeper, who made a huge save to deny the in-form Town player early in the game. Swindon controlled the first ten minutes of play and had several early chances.
After a brilliant first fifteen minutes, Beck-Esson’s move down the left gave the winger another one-on-one opportunity to beat the goalkeeper and chip the ball home to give Town the lead. Even though Rees’ long-range effort went just over the top of the net, it gave Town plenty of motivation to continue and build their lead in the second half.
There was still time in the first half for Swindon to have a couple more opportunities. Swindon Town Women 1, Purton Women FC 0 at the half.
Mia Mugford was found in plenty of space in the middle, allowing her effort from range to find the back of the net with a well-struck strike to expand Town’s advantage early in the second half.
Swindon came out flying in the second half as they looked to build on their first-half showing. A few minutes later, Tia Rees of the Development Team rose to the big moment by scoring Town’s third penalty kick, making the score 3-0 for Town Women.
After that, Rees exceeded expectations and scored a spectacular goal that sealed the win and summed up Town’s outstanding performance on Sunday afternoon. Hattie Jones produced a wonderful run to find the midfielder unmarked, and her long-range effort swerved right past the goalkeeper to give Town their fourth goal of the game.
In the final 20 minutes, Town controlled every ball and dominated the last few minutes of the half. When the full-time whistle blew, Town was victorious and lifted the Wiltshire County Cup for the fifth time in the previous two years, demonstrating the women’s team’s outstanding season of growth this year.
Town Women will now turn their attention to their final two league games of the 23/24 season, which will be away journeys to Abingdon United and Torquay, to round off an impressive season.
