The Minnesota Vikings are by no means a finished product. Especially when you consider their depth players, they have gaps on their squad. Rookies make up the majority of the Vikings depth in those positions.
It would seem apparent that the defensive line is the Vikings’ greatest need. That is not the stance adopted by ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, who stated that the Vikings’ greatest need was at slot receiver in his article outlining each team’s top need.
Although Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson make up an incredible outside duo, the Vikings’ receiving corps truly deteriorates after them. Most likely, Brandon Powell will start as the slot receiver. After six seasons in the league, he did achieve an average DVOA on 44 targets in 2023, but his 324 receiving yards were a career high. The previous season, Trent Sherfield only caught 11 passes in Buffalo.
In two years, Jalen Nailor has only caught 12 passes for Minnesota. This depth chart has a lot of unknown players, and the Vikings would be the ideal team to contact if you were an unsigned free agent.
It’s true that the Vikings lack a slot receiver, so they should look to upgrade in 2024. The third-biggest need I identified for them was wide receiver. It would be irresponsible to dismiss their weakest defensive line as a slot receiver in the National Football League.
The NFL’s interior defensive line is starting to command a premium salary, as evidenced by the contracts that have recently been awarded.
Furthermore, considering the trenches and the fact that they would be the quarterback’s third best option after Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson, slot receivers are not intrinsically important. Besides, when T.J. Hockenson does come back, they would be in the rear.
