Controversy Erupts: Ryan Papenhuyzen’s ‘Hip-Drop’ Incident Rocks NRL – Radley Set to Keep a Close Eye
After Melbourne’s close 16–14 victory against the Bulldogs on Friday night, Ryan Papenhuyzen was sent to the sin bin for two different incidents and was reported for a hip-drop, but he was spared a ban.
The 25-year-old avoided going to the sidelines for the tackle despite receiving a citation for a brutal challenge on Bulldogs star Josh Addo-Carr late in the first half. At the break, former Bulldogs great Michael Ennis said on Fox League that the match review committee might sanction the No. 1.
There is no animosity at all in that; it’s just so difficult that he’s coming across,” Ennis remarked.
However, it was leaked from the bunker, so Melbourne will be disappointed. Ryan Papenhuyzen may have some concerns. “He just swings around, loses his legs, lands on the back of his leg – it’s a hip drop.”

After crossing for the first try of the game, Papenhuzyen’s rollercoaster of an evening continued as the hosts led 10-0 at halftime.
But halfway through the second half, Papenhuyzen was sent off for a professional foul on Stephen Crichton, and opposing front-row player Sam Hughes was also substituted for ten minutes after elbowing Christian Welch.
Addo-Carr scored three tries for Canterbury during a furious stretch, giving them a startling lead. However, Shawn Blore’s late try broke the hearts of the visitors with a stunning two-point victory.
Three more charges were laid out during the match, making it a busy night for the match review committee. A $1,000 punishment has been imposed on storm center Reimis Smith for a grade one reckless high tackle on Jacob Kiraz. When teammate Alec MacDonald made grade one hazardous contact with Matt Burton, he received the same penalty.
Bulldogs merchandise For the second week in a row, Hughes’ name was on the charge sheet. A fine of $1,800 has been offered to him for grade one harmful contact on Welch.
