Breaking: Swindon Town’s Future Hangs in Balance as ‘Two or Three’ Players Await Contract Renewal Decision
Gavin Gunning claims that several Swindon Town players have successfully negotiated their way into contracts for the upcoming campaign.
The futures of the remaining players on the Swindon team are still up in the air after this coming week, as just six of them have contracts that are guaranteed to last through the following campaign.
Given the poor nature of the season, Gunning has often stated that the present group still needs to earn their next contract with Swindon or another club when discussing contract extensions.
When questioned about the current status of the contract discussions with the players during Thursday’s news conference prior of the Grimsby Town match, Gunning said, “I think we are getting close with the players.”
The Advertiser questioned Gunning about whether any players had been able to influence the decision in their favor with their late-season play.
He stated: “With the exception of Sutton, who was obviously not great—that can happen when you have a blip and you stink the house out—a few players in the last four games have really surprised me.”
“We have changed our minds about two, maybe three, players.”
Still, it appears that the team will undergo significant change this summer as Gunning expressed the expectation that Town will focus on bringing in a wealth of experience when the transfer market opens.
The acting head coach gave his opinions on what he believed would have to happen during the summer to elevate Swindon from a team at the bottom of the fourth division to a competitive team near the top of the table.
“I don’t want to divulge into the recruitment strategy, but the dynamics of getting promoted out of this league usually involve people returning to it after receiving a promotion,” he stated.
Those that have achieved success are the ones you bring in because they understand what it takes to succeed in a winning culture.
Additionally, you receive power. A player with strength and legs is needed in midfield, and a communicator with good football players in the back is needed; they will typically take care of the rest for you.
“What you need to do is gain experience along the spine and fill it with some really talented young players and possibly some outstanding loans.”
“It seems like the spine needs some experience, for sure.”
