Could things be improving for Nashville, South Carolina?
After seven games of the 2024 Major League Soccer season, they have only won one and are in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. Out of the 29 clubs in the league, only four teams have fewer points at the beginning of the season. Nashville’s offense hasn’t been able to pull them out of the two-goal hole they frequently find themselves in, and they have failed to defend at their typical level.
The wounds have been severe. On Gary Smith’s team sheet, first-choice players Daniel Lovitz, Lukas MacNaughton, Randall Leal, Sam Surridge, Hany Mukhtar, Tyler Boyd, Shaq Moore, and Walker Zimmerman have missed a total of 32 games in 2024 due to injuries. Any team finds it difficult to overcome that.
The Coyotes enjoyed a much-needed bye week last week after their schedule was packed with games early in the Concacaf Champions Cup. There’s a chance Smith may have his best team available for the first time this season as the club is starting to regain health.
That can’t arrive soon enough for Smith.
“I think we’ve seen goals go in late in games more often than we’ve seen before, if you look at the way that we can maneuver off the bench, for example,” he stated at the team’s matchday-minus-two media availability. “There is no denying that the medical staff is under more pressure than ever to get these players back.”
Nashville should soon have their main players back, which is wonderful news. Due to an unidentified hip ailment, Tyler Boyd has missed the last two games; Randall Leal, on the other hand, has missed the entire season after aggravating a hamstring strain while on international service. Leal has only played 24.3% of the potential minutes for Nashville SC since the 2023 season began. With Shaq Moore and Walker Zimmerman also getting closer to making a comeback, Nashville ought to look very different.

The lack of a true link in Nashville due to Leal and Boyd’s absences has undoubtedly driven Mukhtar into deeper roles this season. Mukhtar has given up his preferred position close to goal in order to find the ball because they haven’t been able to consistently get it to him there. Consequently, the attack appears to have stagnated.
However, Mukhtar’s stats are surprisingly close to his typical range. He’s actually off to his second-best league season start thus far, with 0.76 goals and 0.76 assists for every 90 minutes of play this year. He’s only beaten that once in seven games.
I’ve never had the fastest start to a season in the past,” he chuckled. “I believe that how you end the season matters a great deal. I wasn’t completely fit at the start of the season due to a minor injury. I’m feeling lot better now that I’m returning. I feel great right now.
Much negativity has been expressed about this Nashville, South Carolina side, and for good reason. They’ve had a poor start to the season, and their defensive problems are concerning for a team that has often had the best back line, no matter who is playing.
Fans can hold onto a few strands of optimism despite all the worry. Things might soon change if Mukhtar can maintain the pattern he’s set over the previous four seasons of becoming hot late in the spring and into the summer, along with what should be the most complete group of complimentary attackers he’s ever had who are finally healthy and on the field.
“Having a few different players who can score goals is crucial,” he stated. “Yeah, I need to resume scoring goals.”
“I think we can be a very dangerous team with Randall and Tyler back, with a little bit more creative power.”
