Breaking: Brandon Sosna, the key negotiator for the Detroit Lions, is reportedly joining the Washington Commanders’ front office
Another important front office member for the Detroit Lions is set to go. According to NFL Network, the Lions senior director of football administration Brandon Sosna is set to join the Washington Commanders in a senior role.
For almost a year, Sosna has served as the head contract negotiator for the Lions. Brad Holmes, general manager, praised Sosna’s efforts in free agency this spring. Holmes remarked in March, “It’s been really cool to see his growth in this role.”
“I thought he did a fantastic job last year, which was kind of his first free agency, and this year he really went above and beyond.” So, with all of these deals, Dan Campbell and I can sort of simply talk to him about the folks we’re aiming for, but Sosna and Mike Disner are closing those deals.
Not long after Sosna joined the team from USC in May of 2022, Disner received a promotion to chief operations officer. In addition to managing the wage cap for the Lions, Sosna assisted in this offseason’s negotiations of long-term deals for Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and quarterback Jared Goff.
Holmes described the Lions’ front office setup this spring: “Sosna and I just work side by side, man. “Merely in terms of communication, the players who we’re trying to sign at every level—starters and backups alike.
As we previously discussed, there are three plans: A, B, and C. The key is to communicate consistently.And that’s what’s so fantastic about Brandon: he’s a grinder and about as good a communicator as anyone I’ve ever met. Additionally, he is a grinder, much like myself and many of the guys in our building are.
As a result, there is constant communication and teamwork, to the point where Brandon nearly seems to have a solid sense of what we’re doing.
He’s really proactive in that regard, but that’s basically how things go down; I just kind of talk to him all the time, and he just kind of seals the deals. This summer, the Commanders interviewed Lions coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn for head coaching positions and signed Lions senior director of player personnel Lance Newmark as assistant general manager.
Ultimately, Johnson withdrew from consideration for the position, which was filled by former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. After going from 3-13-1 to 12-5 in three seasons, the Lions have established themselves as a model organization, and this offseason, other teams have attempted to duplicate their achievements.
In addition to hiring the Commanders, the Tennessee Titans reorganized to more closely resemble the Lions’ organizational structure. They also conferred with the group during this offseason’s head coaching search, which resulted in the hiring of Brian Callahan, a former assistant coach for the Lions.
InsideTheLeague.com reports that Dwayne Joseph, a former director of pro personnel for the Las Vegas Raiders, and Tom Roth, a former scout for the Titans, are anticipated to join the Lions’ scouting team.
