IT’S been a tough start to the season for Wrexham and Andy Cannon says there will be no let-up throughout the course of the season because League One is full of quality.
The Reds are back in the third tier following a 19-year absence after clinching two promotions in a row and Phil Parkinson’s side have already been given some tricky tests.
Wrexham won 3-2 against Wycombe Wanderers, who finished 10th in 2023-24, on the opening day and followed that up by registering a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Bolton – last season’s beaten play-off finalists – on Sunday to maintain the unbeaten start.
Cannon is not getting carried away and with Saturday’s home game against Reading followed by a trip to Peterborough, who reached the play-offs last term, the following weekend to complete a difficult August, the midfielder knows it will be the same every month.
But that’s not to say that the 28-year-old, who played in League One with Rochdale and Portsmouth before having a spell with Championship outfit Hull City, doesn’t think that Wrexham can hold their own.
“There are some massive clubs who have struggled to get out of this league,” said Cannon.
“The reason for that is it is a very tough league
“No game is easy in this league. You can’t go into any game and expect three points, you are going to have to work your socks off.
“The games we have had at the start of the season are all tough games.
“You know every game will be tough but we have got to be prepared for that, go out there and give it our all.
“We are here now in League One and we have got to show that we can compete at this level.”
Cannon joined Wrexham in December 2022 and he played his part in the back-to-back promotions at The Racecourse.
Having also won the National League title with Stockport County before arriving in north Wales, Cannon has been used to success.
Although he knows it won’t be easy at a higher level, Cannon is targeting more honours and he jumped at the chance to sign a new contract keeping him at Wrexham until the end of the 2025-26 season with the option to extend it a further year.
“I have enjoyed my football the last 18 months so to get a new deal is something I am really happy about and I am looking forward to the season ahead,” he added.
“I knew the club’s ambitions when I came here and we have achieved that but we have got another season now and I want to be successful again.
“We have got an ambitious squad, staff and owners so we will give it our all, do our best and see where it takes us.
“We have got our aims and we will see where we end up but we have got a good group of lads in there and we all want to work hard and we all want to be successful, but we know it is going to be a very tough season as well.”
