After an automatic promotion in 2003–2004, former left-back Robinson won a Championship title with Albion under Tony Mowbray in 2007–08. He also went through the highs and lows of play-off excitement, with Albion making it to a two-leg semi-final against Wolves in 2007 and losing to Derby at Wembley at the last hurdle.
With Mowbray out due to injury, Robinson, who is currently a coach at the demoted Blues and a member of Gary Rowett’s interim staff, believes that a team’s mentality is crucial to winning in the play-offs.
Ahead of tomorrow’s first leg against the Saints at The Hawthorns, Robinson told the Express & Star: “I think the West Brom experience will help, as it always does. There are leaders there, and the group hasn’t changed; they’ve dealt with the season together.
There aren’t many new January faces, save from Mikey Johnston, who has been outstanding, and Tom Fellows (from the academy), who brings something fresh.
“I believe that unity will carry West Brom through. Southampton will face increased pressure due to their playing style, talent, and status as favourites.
“It’s an exciting tie, and I feel West Brom will win because of their mental strength as a team. If they can neutralize Southampton’s strengths, they will have an advantage. It’s about being patient during the counterattack.”
