Former West Brom Chief Drops Bombshell: Premier League Prep Hinges on THIS Unexpected Factor
Since the turn of the 20th century, West Bromwich Albion has never stayed in the Championship for more than three seasons. In the postseason play at the end of the season, the Baggies appear to be in position to extend that record.
Even though the Hawthorns have lost their last two games against leaders Leicester City and Sunderland, they are still in a strong position to finish in the top six.
After two seasons in which West Brom finished in the middle of the second division, manager Carlos Corberan has improved the team this year. The Albion was in 23rd place when Steve Bruce was fired in October 2022, and the former Huddersfield Town manager assumed leadership of the team.
Many will question if the club is prepared to survive in the Premier League if they do get a spot in the four-team promotion playoff at the conclusion of the season and are victorious.
Tony Pulis, the former manager of the Baggies, was available to speak with the Real EFL about their chances of surviving. After taking over from Alan Irvine in January 2015, Pulis managed the team until November 2017, seeing them through to safety in the top division.
“I think it’s getting harder and harder for clubs who are getting promoted to stay in the league because of the financial benefits that a club staying in the Premiership for a year or two years gains,” the Newport-born manager stated.
He continued by discussing what will be essential for survival and providing a brief overview of the evolution of player signing.
“Recruitment, recruitment, recruitment. I believe that one of the major problems facing football today is that those in charge of hiring are basing their decisions solely on statistics; they are not observing the players or learning about their character.”
“In football, traits are crucial, not only on the field but also off it. I think I saw players two or three times throughout my time as a manager.
“I would watch them two or three times with my scouting setup, trying to figure out if they were heavy drinkers, if they were good pros, and what weaknesses they had.”
The 66-year-old emphasized that having the proper characteristics is crucial to success, but he still has faith in his ability to work with players.
“I recall telling a chairman I worked with when I was very young, ‘character, character, and character,'” I remarked when he asked what qualities I looked for in a player after I was hired.
“I believe that I can help teams and players alike, but the players’ character is what matters most.
