HEARTBREAK: Swindon Town Star Player Benched for Crucial Season Closer – Fans Furious
According to interim head coach Gavin Gunning, Harry McKirdy’s final game for Swindon Town during his loan from Hibernian has already been played.
The 27-year-old returned to the team where he scored 21 goals in the 2021–2022 season and was selected to the League Two Team of the Season, making his comeback on loan on deadline day during the January transfer window.
However, in his nine games since returning to the County Ground, McKirdy has only made one start. Against Harrogate Town, he played the first half before being substituted, and he scored his only goal with a stunning shot in stoppage time against Gillingham in February.
Following his six-minute cameo at the conclusion of the 2-0 victory over Barrow, McKirdy was rested against AFC Wimbledon and did not play against Walsall or Grimsby Town due to a niggle.
The season’s last game against Morecambe will not see the previous Swindon Advertiser Player of the Season have one last send-off for this loan spell because he is still not well enough to play.
“Harry won’t be involved at the weekend,” Gunning declared. He might be anywhere in between [Swindon and Hibernian], in my opinion.
Not only was McKirdy hoping to return in time for the championship game, but Tariq Uwakwe and Reece Devine were also vying for fitness.
Uwakwe hasn’t played for Town since his halftime withdrawal against Notts County in October, and he hasn’t played in the league since his performance against Reading in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
The 24-year-old has been suffering with a significant knee injury that was originally expected to keep him out for eight to 10 weeks. However, in February, just as he was about to make a comeback, he sustained another injury.
In the penultimate match of his second season at Swindon, Devine will be looking to make his debut at the County Ground.
The former Manchester United youth player’s tenure in Wiltshire has been marred by injury; throughout the course of two seasons, he has only played 53 minutes in league play due to two serious hamstring strains.
Uwakwe’s chances of making an appearance were questioned by Gunning, although Devine might make his County Ground debut.
“We shall see,” he remarked, “but I’m not sure if Tariq and Reece can play.”
