“Watch Out, AFL!” – Jimmy Bartel’s Huge Call on Collingwood’s 2025 Season
Jimmy Bartel and Matthew Lloyd have shared their thoughts on Collingwood ahead of their Opening Round clash against GWS on Sunday afternoon, offering contrasting opinions on the Magpies’ prospects for the 2025 season.
While Lloyd remains cautious about Collingwood’s chances, stating he is “unsure” about where they stand, Bartel is far more confident, predicting a strong resurgence for the 2023 premiers. Speaking on Wide World of Sports, the Geelong great made a bold call about the Pies’ potential.
“I’ve got them as a top-four side,” Bartel said. “They should be four wins better, which actually puts them as a top-four side.”
Collingwood endured a disappointing 2024 campaign, failing to reach the heights of their premiership-winning season the year before. However, Bartel believes they are well-placed to bounce back, with a mix of experienced stars and young talent ready to fire under Craig McRae.
The Pies faced several challenges in 2024, including injuries to key players and inconsistent performances that saw them struggle to build momentum. Despite that, Bartel thinks those hurdles have only made them stronger heading into 2025. With a more settled squad and key players returning, he sees no reason why Collingwood can’t reestablish themselves among the AFL’s elite.
Lloyd, on the other hand, isn’t convinced. While he acknowledges the talent within Collingwood’s ranks, he remains hesitant to declare them a genuine contender just yet. His concerns likely stem from their struggles last season and whether they can rediscover their best form.
Sunday’s clash against GWS will offer an early test for the Magpies, who will be eager to make a statement. A strong performance could reinforce Bartel’s belief that they are a top-four side, while a shaky start might add weight to Lloyd’s uncertainty.
