Warriors’ Stephen Curry solidifies his place among basketball’s top tier
Stephen Curry is 36 years old, but he, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant seem totally immune to the passing of time. After missing all but five games for the Golden State Warriors in the 2019-20 season, Curry has remained one of the best players in the world, averaging 28.2 points, 5.8 assists, and shooting 40.8 percent over the last four seasons. Since his injury-shortened season, each summer has been full of hot-take artists proclaiming that he simply doesn’t have any gas left in the tank. While the day where he calls it quits might be getting closer, he is still an elite player. Against France in the gold medal game, Curry silenced the doubters, scoring 24 points and making eight of his 13 attempts from behind the arc. With that August game in mind, Curry is clearly still one of the best. As the NBA regular season gets closer, the league released the results of its annual poll of the league’s general managers. As expected, Luka Doncic, Victor Wembanyama, and Nikola Jokic all ranked highly in several categories, but Curry is still up there with the best of the best.
23 percent of the league’s executives think he is still the best point guard in the game, coming in third behind Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who are both in MVP discussions. Of course, Curry was still listed as easily the best shooter in the league, but the fact that the aging guard is still a top-three point guard (and top-five shooting guard!) is enough to cement his case as one of the best backcourt players ever. According to the league’s GMs, Curry still has the likes of Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Haliburton, Tyrese Maxey, and Trae Young beaten. Frankly, until he decides to step away from the game, he will likely continue to be one of the best offensive players in the NBA.
The Warriors, who are aiming to go on a deep playoff run, are confident that their 36-year-old superstar can be relied on down the stretch, and they spent the offseason adding plenty of talent around him to better complement him.
