Indeed, there have been brief moments. The Celtics made a few tweaks, tightened up their defense, and relied on the law of averages to help them win after the devastating Game 2 defeat to the Heat. They managed to walk the tightrope during the first round.
After three decisive victories, they eliminated Miami. An analysis of their demise only uncovered what Boston had been doing to their opponents all year long as they amassed a 64-18 regular season record: they play suffocating defense (96.4 points per 100 possessions) and bury teams under a barrage of threes (averaging nearly 16 of 41 in their wins).
Without a really good defense (ranked second in the league) and offense (ranked first in the league and historically amazing), you do not end the regular season 64–18 with an 11.7 net rating. We are aware, though, that the Celtics are capable of more.
It’s true that their carefree attitude toward defeats, especially the lopsided Game 2 loss to the Cavaliers on Thursday, may be annoying. Sometimes, Joe Mazzulla’s welcoming demeanor toward adversity seems like something your parents may say to you when you’re having a rough day.
Even though Jayson Tatum’s statement that “it’s a make or miss league” is correct, fans don’t want to hear it since perception is reality.
