Journalist Alan Nixon claims that the Blades are preparing a bold bid to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony patterson. Patterson rose through the Black Cats system to become the team’s first choice goalkeeper and has since established himself as one of the Championship’s top goalkeepers.
Despite his team’s troubles and Sunderland’s mid-table finish, Patterson had another fantastic season on the individual front, keeping 13 clean sheets in 46 games across all competitions.
Wes Foderingham’s contract is expiring this summer, and manager Chris Wilder is reportedly eager to add a new first-choice goalkeeper. Ivo Grbic, who joined from Atletico Madrid in January, hasn’t exactly made an impression, so it might be difficult for them to win the race for Patterson.
According to reports, United will make an offer of £8 million for Patterson, but Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool will compete, and the 24-year-old has also been linked to Celtic and Arsenal. Viktor Johansson of Rotherham United is another goalkeeper who the Blades are reportedly considering, but they have reportedly cooled their interest in him for the time being as they pursue more well-known players.
Additionally, according to Nixon, United has “made their sales pitch” to Luke Ayling, a defender for Leeds United who is not under contract.
When Ayling’s contract expires this summer, he will move out of Elland Road. The Blades are eager to get him to Bramall Lane, but Middlesbrough may beat them to it. After spending the second half of the season on loan at Riverside Stadium, the 32-year-old showed his versatility by dishing up eight assists in just 19 appearances. This summer, Boro hopes to sign him permanently.
