Even though the Sabres have not made a commitment to trade the center yet, a number of teams have been mentioned in connection with a possible Cozens trade.
Cozens might be viewed by Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman as a way to strengthen the center position behind captain Dylan Larkin.
In an effort to improve their fortunes and establish themselves as a consistent contender, the Red Wings want young, talented players to develop alongside the team. The Sabres are under pressure to improve, which might result in a poor trade decision.
Cozens
Cozens, 23, has been an interesting player since entering the NHL. He has displayed the makings of a future star, especially in the 2023–24 campaign when he scored 31 goals and accumulated 68 points. But his performance has declined. He was unable to produce at the same level after agreeing to a lucrative contract extension.
If the Sabres believe Cozens’ recent difficulties are more than just a passing fad, they might think about making a move. From Detroit is point of view, bringing in Cozens might be a wise risk, as the young center would benefit greatly from a new beginning.
It might also be a risk if Cozens does not achieve the same level of success in a single, strong season.
At the moment, Cozens is on track to score 16 goals and 40 points. The team’s lack of success in Buffalo may be partially to blame, but another factor may be that Cozens is not the 30-goal player that some believed him to be.
Does Cozens Have a Role in Detroit and Yzmerman’s Plan?
In an effort to find consistency and a route to the playoffs, the Red Wings have been actively reshaping their roster. Finding a second-line center appears to have been Yzerman’s top priority. Cozens might be that player, but how much would it cost to sign him?
Although it is unclear what Buffalo might ask for in exchange for Cozens, Detroit has prospects and draft picks. They also have the cap space to make a deal, assuming they send an active roster member back in the trade.
We may want to keep a close eye on this rumor as the NHL trade deadline draws near.
