A Public Letter Addressed to Kevin Durant

Dear Kevin,

Initially, I will start by saying that I’m a big fan. But I am not writing today to talk about basketball. Instead, I write to address what I perceive to be an injustice — perhaps a slight one, but an injustice nonetheless. In particular, it came to my attention recently that you have blocked on Twitter my friend and managing editor of this wonderful website, John Voita.

Now, I’m not going to sit here and pretend like the media cannot, at times, be a nuisance. As Phoenix Suns fans, we’ve experienced it for years. Stephen A. Smith has been trading Devin Booker to the New York Knicks since approximately 2019. Now, he’s gone in on you, and, of course, we’ve got Woj sounding like he’s a bottle and a half deep into a White Zinfandel, spouting out nonsense about you, also.

So, we get it. The media can be a pain.

The media can deserve your ire. But Bright Side of the Sun is not the place to focus that ire. Unlike the “problematic media” — if you will — Bright Side of the Sun is not made up of people who are all trying to increase their notoriety or further their media careers. Bright Side is made up of a bunch of fans who get paid little to nothing to provide Suns content. So, you need not focus your frustrations at Bright Side because, as fans, we share them.

This site being operated by fans also means that Bright Side is not driven by the same motivations that drive the problematic media. Anytime someone from this website writes or talks about the Suns, we’re not doing it to advance our own interests. We’re doing it, frankly, because we care. We care about the Suns and fellow fans, and we want to provide content.

So, what’s my point? Just like not every person is built the same, not every media organization is built the same. Whatever you’ve experienced and whatever conceptions you generally have about the media, likely do not apply to us. We’re not here to slander or denigrate you, Kevin. We’re here because we admire you. We’re here because we admire this team. We’re here because this team means so much to our city and our community.

At our cores, Kevin Durant and Bright Side want the same thing: we want to see you and the Suns succeed. Bright Side is here to support that.

In closing, please unblock John Voita.
