The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Quarterback Situation Is a Total Disaster
The Pittsburgh Steelers will have a new quarterback room for the second straight season. After turning over the new leaf in the 2024 season by letting go of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch Trubisky, the Steelers are doing the same this offseason.
This year, Kyle Allen, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields headed elsewhere. Pittsburgh has Skylar Thompson and Rudolph under contract, and the pursuit of Aaron Rodgers continues for the team.
For Pittsburgh, it will be the fifth different starting quarterback in as many years. The Steelers join only the Atlanta Falcons in that category. It shows a lack of ability to develop the position and evaluate it in general, especially since the Steelers did spend a first round pick on a quarterback in that timeframe.
If the Steelers end up signing someone like Rodgers, it basically guarantees a sixth straight season of a different starting quarterback. It is hard to build any identity or continuity as an organization with that much turnover, even if the constants, such as Mike Tomlin, remain.
That is why it is more important than ever the Steelers need to look toward finding a franchise quarterback. It seems likely they do not view the 2025 NFL Draft as the antidote to that issue, so it will likely wait another season. Either way, Pittsburgh has to find their way out of the quarterback purgatory they are in now, and the best way to do that is the NFL Draft.
