Parramatta has lost centre Will Penisini and hooker Ryley Smith to suspension in a blow to its finals hopes following Sunday night’s gritty 36-20 win over the Gold Coast Titans.
Penisini has been dealt a three-game suspension and Smith a two-match ban after dangerous tackles marred the closing stages of the Eels’ victory at CommBank Stadium.
Penisini, who was sent to the sin bin for putting Titans back-rower Beau Fermor in a dangerous position with a lifting tackle, will have his three-game ban extended to four matches if he challenges the charge at the judiciary and loses.
Smith, who lifted Titans centre Phillip Sami into a dangerous position, will have his two-match suspension extended to three games if he fights the charge and is unsuccessful.
The Eels scored their fifth win of the season to rise to 15th on the ladder, and are now three points behind the eighth-placed Panthers, but being without Penisini and Smith for several weeks will hinder their bid to play finals football for the first time since 2022.
