NEWS: UNC Basketball Sensation RJ Davis Shocks Nation with Jerry West Award Win

The National Championship, which takes place tonight, caps off Final Four weekend, and several year-end honors are being given out. There are position awards as well, but most people are aware of the ones that name the individual players of the year, which Zach Edey will undoubtedly win.

In particular, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame honors legendary players by naming it after them and giving out medals to the best player in each position. The Bob Cousy Award, which is given to the best point guard in the game, is well-known to Tar Heel supporters because it was won by Raymond Felton, Ty Lawson, and Kendall Marshall during their last seasons at UNC.

For the first time since it was established in 2015, a Tar Heel has won the Jerry West Award for top shooting guard in the nation.

Davis now stands alongside D’Angelo Russell and Malik Monk as former winners. It’s the first other position award that a Tar Heel has gotten from the Hall of Fame.

The West Award is just one of several honors that Davis has received. Before the ACC Tournament even started, he was named the ACC Player of the Year, making him the 19th Tar Heel to be selected unanimously to the first team of All-America.

One day, when his time at Carolina is up, he will return to see his jersey hanging in the rafters with too many other outstanding recipients to mention.

After Joel Berry’s 2018 season, he will be the first player to wear his jersey there. After Davis won the prize, there were many congratulations, but Caleb Love, a former teammate, may have given the greatest one:

It would take Davis returning and winning Player of the Year to push Edey’s jersey up to the front row where it may be retired, as Edey is expected to rightfully dominate those accolades.

Following the conclusion of Hubert Davis’s discussions with all of the players last week, Davis and the other eligible members are currently considering their choices and will likely make an announcement shortly.
