Washington (AP) — Nick Jensen, a Washington Capitals defenseman, is aware, alert, and using his limbs after being stretchered off the ice following a terrifying accident, according to the team, adding that he will continue to be examined.
Jensen’s head hit the boards and his body fell limp after being shoved by Tampa Bay’s Michael Eyssimont late in the first period of their game on Saturday.
He was cared to by emergency medical professionals for several minutes after trainers requested a stretcher. Officials postponed the first game’s last 1:31 to be played after intermission.
Referee Frederick L’Ecuyer announced that no penalty was called on the play, which elicited boos from the crowd.
Fans booed Eyssimont every time he touched the puck afterward, and Dowd dropped the gloves to fight him in the second. Dowd’s third fight in the NHL. Jensen was hurt just as the Capitals and Lightning were deadlocked at two.
His absence is the latest setback for Washington’s blue line, which is also without Rasmus Sandin, whose head collided with a stanchion Sunday against Ottawa and is sidelined for the rest of the season.
