News: He Delivers, Why Cardinals’ Star Pitcher Is Their Best Decision

Saint-Louis After making two starts in 2024, Steven Matz has performed admirably at the back end of the Cardinals’ rotation, exceeding all expectations.

The game was still 0-0 in the third inning when the veteran southpaw worked around four hits in five scoreless innings in a 3-1 victory over the Marlins on Saturday at Busch Stadium. After 10 1/3 innings, Matz’s ERA is currently a respectable 1.74.

The Marlins, who qualified for the playoffs the previous season, were even more frustrated by his performance as Miami fell to 0-9 while the Cardinals improved to 5-4.

Due to a lat strain, Matz missed the majority of the final two months of the 2023 campaign. This spring, the Cardinals eased him back into the lineup.

After throwing 81 pitches in his first start against the Dodgers on Saturday, Oliver Marmol, manager of the Cardinals, removed him at 85 pitches.

He was replaced by Giovanny Gallegos, who began the sixth inning with no hits. Pregame, Marmol remarked, “We’re seeing a much more confident version of him.”

“Having a feel for things and being healthy play a part in that, but he felt pretty good about his current situation when he left Spring Training.” And as you could see, the ball was executed quite nicely in his debut.
