News: Columbus Fury Stunned as De la Cruz, Valentin-Anderson Combo Powers Novas to Victory
OMAHA: The Omaha Supernovas (11-5) defeated the Columbus Fury (5-8) in four sets on Thursday night at the CHI Health Center, winning 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, and 25-22.
The Omaha Supernovas’ combination of Olympians Bethania de la Cruz and Natalia Valentín-Anderson proved to be too much for the Fury. The Supernovas have now won four straight home games dating back to March 16 after beginning the season 2-3 at home.
De la Cruz equaled her own record with 26 kills on Thursday night, one match after she had set the franchise mark with 26 kills. On a franchise record, she did so.585 hitting % on 41 swings with just two hitting mistakes. In her endeavor, De la Cruz added 14 digs as well.
Just one week after Sydney Hilley, a teammate, broke the previous record with 51 assists, Valentín-Anderson set another franchise mark with 57. In addition, the Puerto Rican had two kills, four digs, one block, and one ace.
For Valentín-Anderson, who reached that record against Grand Rapids in February, it’s his second 50-assist game of the year.
In opposition Both Nia Reed and team captain Brooke Nuneviller recorded double-digit kills. Reed had her best performance of the year, finishing with a season-high 16 kills at a.314 rate, nine digs, one block, and one assist.
After a difficult start, Nuneviller managed to link up with Valentín-Anderson and finished with 14 kills and 16 digs, marking her 11th double-double of the year.
Hristina Vuchkova and Tori Dixon, middle blockers, remained silent for the majority of the evening. With five kills, three digs, one block, and one ace, Vuchkova dominated the attack. Dixon contributed three digs and three kills. Gabby Thompson, a libero, recorded nine digs and two assists in her maiden professional start.
Omaha’s team hitting percentage of.310 is the second-highest of the season. With two aces and five blocks in the end, the Supernovas matched season lows.
Reagan Cooper and Megan Courtney Lush both scored 17 kills, meaning that three Fury players achieved double digits in kills. Prominent middle blocker Asjia O’Neal contributed two blocks and 11 kills at a.364 clip.
With a total of 11 digs, Courtney Lush finished with a double-double. Together, the Fury had nine blocks, one ace, and a.274 batting average. In what will be a matchup between the top two teams in the league on Saturday, April 13, the Supernovas will take a nine-day vacation before traveling to Atlanta to take on the Vibe. First serve is scheduled.
