Swindon Starlet Joel McGregor Signs New Deal Until 2027
Swindon Town defender Joel McGregor has pledged his future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at the County Ground until the summer of 2027.
The 19-year-old, a product of the club’s academy system, has risen through the ranks after joining the Robins at under-12 level. Having made his first-team league debut in April 2024, McGregor has since become a key figure in Ian Holloway’s youthful side.
This season marked a major breakthrough for the teenage centre-back, who made 24 appearances across all competitions. His maturity on the pitch and composure beyond his years earned praise from fans and coaching staff alike, making him one of the standout young performers in a transitional campaign for the club.
Speaking to the club after putting pen to paper, McGregor credited manager Ian Holloway for influencing his decision to stay long-term.
“The manager, Ian Holloway, has had a huge effect on all the players and the energy around the club this year,” McGregor said. “Everyone is really positive about the future and getting the chance to learn under him for the next few years played a big part in me signing my contract extension at the club.”
Holloway, appointed during the 2024–25 season, has overseen a steady rebuilding phase at Swindon, with an emphasis on youth development and attacking football. McGregor’s new deal is seen as a key part of that vision, as the club looks to nurture its homegrown talents and build a side capable of challenging at the top end of League Two next season.
Swindon Town finished the 2024–25 League Two campaign in 12th place, showing glimpses of progress but ultimately falling short of the play-off places. Despite the mid-table finish, there is a growing sense of optimism around the club, with McGregor’s extension viewed as a statement of intent ahead of the new season.
With experience now under his belt and the backing of the coaching staff, McGregor is expected to play an even more prominent role in 2025–26. For a club that has often had to sell young talent, tying down one of their brightest prospects is a significant boost — and a signal that Swindon are looking to build, not rebuild.
