The Prospects Marinaro and McCagg See Making the Canadiens This Season
Tony Marinaro and Grant McCagg went through the Montreal Canadiens’ prospects list last night and there are a couple players they think will be making the team out of camp.
There will be a lot of youth at the Montreal Canadiens camp this season both at the back and up front. The young men who make the team must have a strong camp because there will be so much competition. The challenge will come not only from their fellow prospects but also from returning veterans who will be looking to bounce back. Tony Marinaro and Grant McCagg discussed who they thought might make the team out of camp on the latest The Sick Podcast.
Two of the young players they discussed (Justin Barron and Emil Heineman) will be waiver eligible this season, meaning that if the Canadiens want to send them down to the AHL with the Laval Rocket, they’ll have to clear waivers first. This might realistically give them an inside track no matter how unfair it is.
McCagg believes Logan Mailloux could make the team if the Canadiens do not mind using Barron as their seventh defenseman, if they won’t he sees Mailloux starting in Laval, unless another defenseman or two are traded before the start of camp.

They believe David Reinbacher will need more time in the AHL to get accustomed to the North American game. Furthermore, should Mailloux end up in Laval too, that would make quite the one-two punch on the right side of the blue line.
They add that Owen Beck, probably Florian Xhekaj as well and Filip Mesar should all be starting in Laval alongside Adam Engstrom and William Trudeau on the blue line. Meanwhile Sean Farrell and Riley Kidney should also be staying in the AHL. In other words, there is going to be a lot of talent in Laval this coming year.
There are two prospects Marinaro thinks will be starting in Montreal, Joshua Roy because he looked pretty good up there last season and Lane Hutson because of the way he reads the game. They would pair Hutson with David Savard and allow the youngster to play with better players than if he started in the AHL. I’ve got to say, it seems like a reasonable assumption to me. I would keep Hutson out of the AHL just to make sure he’s not run over by a career AHLer trying to injure him.
