In a recent interview, former Detroit Tigers standout Justin Turner didn’t hold back when discussing his departure from the organization. Turner, who spent several seasons with the Tigers, described his decision to leave as a major turning point in his career, calling it “one of the best moves I’ve ever made.”
“Looking back, leaving Detroit was a step up,” Turner remarked, clearly indicating that the atmosphere within the Tigers’ organization was less than ideal. “I loved the fans and the city, but the leadership and the direction of the team? Let’s just say, I had to get out to achieve the success I wanted.”
Turner, now flourishing with his new team, also took a shot at some former members of the Tigers’ staff, particularly calling out ex-manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Chris Bosio. “There was a lack of vision, and at times, it felt like the team was stuck in neutral,” Turner added. “You can’t grow as a player when the people guiding you aren’t evolving themselves.”
This isn’t the first time former players have critiqued the Tigers’ management, but Turner’s comments are particularly sharp. Since his departure, Turner has found success both individually and as part of a competitive team, further fueling the narrative that leaving Detroit was a step up in his career trajectory.
While the Tigers have struggled to find consistency in recent seasons, Turner’s remarks will no doubt stir the pot among fans and former teammates. When asked whether he would ever consider returning to Detroit, Turner laughed off the suggestion, simply saying, “I’ve moved on to bigger and better things.”
Detroit Tigers representatives have yet to respond to Turner’s comments, but it’s clear the relationship between the player and the franchise has soured beyond repair.
