Just In: Another compelling argument for the Toronto Maple Leafs to hold onto Mitch Marner
It’s no secret that, despite the Stanley Cup Playoffs still ongoing, Mitch Marner’s name has been on everyone’s offseason trade list. With the Toronto Maple Leafs having lost more than five playoff games for eight straight years, many of the team’s supporters are weary of the team’s frequent early eliminations.
With all the setbacks, a lot of supporters are (rightfully) calling for a significant overhaul of the team’s squad, with Marner’s name being mentioned the most frequently.
That being said, for the following reasons, I think the Toronto Maple Leafs would be better served having him around for at least one more season.
One More Justification for Mitch Marner to Remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs Mitch Marner is about to reach the last year of his deal, and we’ve seen players consistently have their best seasons in the final year before becoming unrestricted free agents.
Whether it’s Sam Reinhart, a more recent example, or former Leafs star Nazem Kadri. William Nylander, who had his finest year to date just this past season, is another excellent illustration of this.
After scoring a career-high 98 points in his contract year, Nylander was extended by the organization for an additional eight years.
Marner has no reason why he can’t follow suit.
Former Leafs players like the aforementioned Kadri, Zach Hyman, Frederick Andersen, and even Phil Kessel, to mention a few, have left Toronto to enjoy great success elsewhere.
It’s always perilous to trade away any good player, but there are several reasons why it’s more dangerous to trade a superstar like Mitch Marner.
There’s always a chance that the Leafs won’t get back as much as they gave up (in this case, Marner) if they decide to deal him.
In addition to the chance that Marner, in his contract year, may have his finest season ever with a new team.
In any case, I would rather that Marner stay with the Leafs for a minimum of another season.
The addition of Craig Berube to the team has already had a significant impact, and the defense group’s improvements could put the team closer than most to a lengthy postseason run.
Even so, I believe Mitch Marner is a valuable member of this squad and should remain, but Brad Treliving needs to have a huge game if they decide to trade him. We’ll have to wait and watch as the summer progresses.
