“Heartbreaking News”: Texas Faces Major Setback Before College Football Playoff!
Just a few days ago the Texas Longhorns suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC title game. It was the second loss for Texas against Georgia this season after losing 30-15 in the first meeting in Austin earlier this season.
While the SEC Championship Game was a bit closer – a 22-19 overtime victory for the Bulldogs – the Longhorns were left with a bitter taste in their mouths again. With the loss, Texas fell from No. 2 to No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings and hold the No. 5 seed in the playoff bracket.
The Longhorns will host a playoff game against No. 12 seed Clemson, which defeated the SMU Mustangs in the ACC Championship Game to become the first three-loss team in the playoff. Not long after their SEC title game loss, the Longhorns suffered two more losses.
On Monday morning former four-star recruits Tausili Akana and Derion Gullete reportedly decided to transfer away from the program, according to a report from On3Sports insider Hayes Fawcett.
Akana played in just one game for the Longhorns this season, racking up a single tackle against University of Texas – San Antonio in the early portion of the season. Gullette, meanwhile, didn’t play during the 2023 season as he recovered from a knee injury, but did play in five games this season – against Colorado State, UTSA, ULM, Oklahoma, and in the first matchup against Georgia. Gullette has two career tackles.
Following the SEC title game loss, head coach Steve Sarkisian admitted his team could use a break before their playoff game against Clemson on December 21. “Now, it’s our job to kind of regroup and get ourselves as healthy as we can to go compete in a playoff.
We have time. We essentially have a bye to get ready for that game, and so we will do the best we can. I know our players will, from a rehab and a recovery standpoint, and we’ll find out who we’re playing and put together a plan and go to work.” Clemson and Texas kick off at 4:00 p.m. ET on TNT and Max. The Longhorns enter the game as an 11-point favorite.
