Swindon Town have officially confirmed the return of Lewis Ward for a third spell at the club, with the experienced goalkeeper signing a one-year deal following his departure from AFC Wimbledon at the end of last season.
The 28-year-old is no stranger to the County Ground. Ward made 19 appearances during the 2021–22 season and returned for a brief stint the following year, playing eight more matches for the Robins. Now, after a season featuring four EFL Trophy appearances for the Dons, Ward is back — and ready to compete.
Having also represented clubs like Exeter City, Portsmouth, Sutton United, and Forest Green Rovers, Ward brings a wealth of experience and will add serious competition for Connor Ripley in the battle for the number one shirt.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Ward said:
“I’m looking forward to being back. The opportunity just felt right to return. I had really good conversations with Steve Mildenhall (goalkeeping coach) over the off-season, came back in training with the group, and from the first conversation with the manager Ian Holloway, everything just seemed to fit together.”
He continued: “The manager and Steve played a huge part in my reason to return to the club; everything we’ve discussed is everything I wanted to hear.”
With pre-season preparations underway, Ward’s return provides Swindon with added depth and familiarity at a crucial position.
