COMEBACK! Coach Lands Top Championship Job After Dramatic Birmingham City Departure
Former Birmingham City fitness coach Dave Carolan has landed a new job at Derby County. Carolan returned to Blues as technical performance coach at the end of last season to help form part of interim manager Gary Rowett’s back-room staff, but he also left with Rowett and Paul Robinson following the club’s relegation to League One.
Carolan, who has also been at Derby under Rowett before, has rejoined with the Rams back in the Championship having spent two seasons in League One under Paul Warne. Carolan will work under Warne as the club’s first-team performance coach, the role he held previously at Pride Park between April 2017 and June 2018, when Rowett left for Stoke City.
Carolan, who also worked with Rowett for almost four years before the team left the New Den in October of last year and who has held consultancy roles at Ipswich and Aston Villa, spent 10 years as the head of sports science at Norwich City, during which time the Canaries won promotion to the Premier League under Nigel Worthington.
He joined Blues and Rowett initially in the summer of 2015 when making the switch from Colchester United, where he’d been a sports scientist and fitness coach for seven years.
Carolan joined Derby ahead of pre-season and posted on X: “3 weeks later, as my feet haven’t touched the ground. Delighted to re-join @dcfcofficial after 6 years away & see so many old faces who have kept the place going, as well as so many new ones who’ve joined over the years. Not long til the start of another season in the @EFL @SkyBetChamp.”
