Dan Campbell has seen a lot in his time as both an NFL player and coach, but nothing quite like Sunday night’s game.
The Lions pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat the Houston Texans 26-23, despite Jared Goff throwing five interceptions—more than he had in the season’s first eight games combined. The Lions were down 23-7 at halftime.
“The chances of winning with five turnovers are slim,” Campbell noted. “This win was a complete team effort in every aspect.”
Kicker Jake Bates was clutch, making a 58-yard field goal to tie in the fourth quarter and then nailing a 52-yarder to clinch the victory as the clock expired.
This victory marked the Lions as the first team since the 2012 Atlanta Falcons to win a game after throwing five interceptions.
Campbell gave significant praise to the defense, which held the Texans to just three field goals in the first half and shut them out in the second.
“It’s incredibly challenging for a defense when they’re out there stopping the opponent, only to have us throw an interception two plays later,” Campbell said. “That performance was massive, especially factoring in the two takeaways.”
Veteran cornerback Carlton Davis had a stellar night, intercepting two of C.J. Stroud’s passes in the second half, including one near the 3-yard line.
“I told C.D. on Saturday that he might be our best acquisition this season,” Campbell remarked. “How can you not admire a corner who can cover, tackle, shut down the run, and make two crucial picks?”
