Analyzing Dante Fowler’s Standout Performance Against the Panthers
With the Commanders facing injuries at defensive end this season, Fowler has stepped up, playing over 50% of the snaps. He’s capitalizing on his chances and is having a strong season, leading the team in key stats, including 4.5 sacks, tied for 6 tackles for loss with Bobby Wagner, and tied for 1 interception.
Fowler’s performance against the Panthers was particularly noteworthy, showcasing his ability to make impactful plays. The Panthers began their first drive effectively, achieving several significant gains. However, on the fifth play of the game, Fowler set the tone. He executed a stunt with defensive tackle Daron Payne, aiming to confuse the offensive line. Fowler moved inside towards the right guard, attempting to draw the right tackle inward, while Payne looped around to the edge. Although the tackle managed to pick up Payne, the guard was caught off guard by Fowler, allowing him to slip through and pressure quarterback Andy Dalton.
Dalton managed to get a pass off despite the pressure, demonstrating Fowler’s effectiveness against the Panthers’ offensive line. On the next play, Fowler’s impact was even more pronounced. The Panthers attempted a throwback screen, faking a jet sweep with rookie receiver Xavier Legette and a play-action pass. As Dalton prepared to throw to Legette, it looked like the Commanders were in trouble, with three offensive linemen out in front and no defenders nearby.
However, Fowler intervened. He stunted inside, quickly defeating a tight end’s block on the backside of the screen. This aggressive move allowed him to pressure Dalton, forcing an off-balance throw that sailed beyond Legette’s reach. Had Dalton been able to set up properly, it could have resulted in a touchdown for the Panthers. Instead, Fowler’s pressure forced a second and ten.
