Breaking: Roberto De Zerbi After Leaving Set to Join Shock New Club After Manchester United and Chelsea Snubs
There are reports in Italy and France that Roberto De Zerbi is going to take over as head coach of Marseille. After leaving Brighton at the end of the season, the 45-year-old was being evaluated by Chelsea and Manchester United.
Since then, United has chosen to continue with Erik ten Hag, while Chelsea appointed Enzo Maresca following Mauricio Pochettino’s mutually agreed departure from Stamford Bridge.
De Zerbi was also a candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich, but Vincent Kompany was chosen by the Bundesliga team to take Tuchel’s place.
While all was happening, Marseille has been looking for a new head coach since Jean-Louis Gasset, who took over for Gennaro Gattuso in February as temporary manager, retired at the end of the season.
Sportitalia and RMC Sport claim that Marseille and De Zerbi are currently in advanced negotiations, with the Italian almost certain to agree to a move to the French team. It is believed that Marseille had discussions with Sergio Conceicao, who departed Porto at the end of the season.
However, the Ligue 1 team is now putting De Zerbi’s acquisition first and is in talks for a three-year deal. After Graham Potter was fired as Brighton’s manager in September 2022, De Zerbi led the team to an outstanding sixth-place finish in the Premier League, securing European participation for the first time in the team’s existence.
Brighton placed eleventh this season, however De Zerbi struggled with multiple injuries to important members of his team.
Brighton advanced to the Europa League’s round of 16, where they were defeated 4-1 overall by Roma. Following Brighton’s last Premier League match, De Zerbi responded to a question on his future by saying, “There isn’t any club – no-one offered [anything].”
Nothing as of yet. “I want to work for the Premier League once more.” Where and when are unknown to me. However, working in the Premier League was an honor.
