Breaking News: Lakers Coaching Pick Send Fan Into Excitement
The Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the 2024 NBA Playoffs a few weeks ago, but the team hasn’t had time to recover as they begin a new hunt for a head coach.
Former head coach Darvin Ham of the Lakers was fired, as was generally expected, and the franchise has reportedly been considering a number of applicants to take his position ever since. Sam Cassell, James Borrego, and JJ Redick are currently seen as the top contenders for the position, but other candidates, like as Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, may also be considered.
It’s thought that L.A. is considering a variety of applicants, both with and without head coaching experience.
Quinn, a former NBA player, spent the majority of his time learning under current Heat coach Erik Spoelstra while serving as an assistant coach for more than ten years.
Quinn has never held the position of head coach. As an undrafted guard, Quinn spent his first few years in the league playing in Miami. After that, he moved around the league until the Cleveland Cavaliers waived him, which put an end to his playing career.
Before rejoining the Heat in the same role, the former point guard worked as Northwestern’s assistant coach for one season.
In his ten years as a Heat reserve, he has seen the postseason eight times and the NBA Finals twice as a part of Spoelstra’s coaching staff. Quinn has interviewed for other head coaching positions and should get his chance sooner rather than later, even though he hasn’t yet been hired for one.
People rave about Quinn’s ability to coach players and has reportedly been named as one of the individuals that most embodies “Heat Culture.” He’s also been described as an emotionally mature and organized individual, traits he likely picked up working under Spoelstra.
As a former player, he understands how to control a locker room and get players to buy in to what the coaching staff is asking for.
Quinn’s lack of head coaching experience is the biggest mark against his resume, but the Lakers should still give him a go. The fact that the Heat struggled to score in half court situations raises additional concerns about his offensive philosophy.
