Breaking: Kentucky’s Dream Transfer Target Stuns Fans with Jaw-Dropping College Decision
The NCAA transfer portal’s #1 target for Kentucky basketball has chosen his college. Moreover, the Wildcats weren’t the option. Chaz Lanier, a guard from North Florida, committed to Tennessee on Friday night via the NCAA transfer site.
Lanier, a 6-foot-4, 199-pound guard, was considered one of the best offensive players to join the portal this summer. He spent four seasons playing at North Florida.
Lanier made three recruiting trips to BYU, Kentucky, and Tennessee, three possible landing locations, via the transfer portal.
In the end, Lanier, who scored 19.7 points a game on average and 106 3-pointers for North Florida the previous season, committed to the Volunteers.
Lanier shot 3 points at a rate of 44% for a North Florida team that finished 16–16 overall the previous season. In the 2023–24 campaign, Lanier achieved career highs in the following categories: field goal percentage (51%), 3-point shooting percentage (44%), assists per game (1.8), steals per game (0.9), minutes per game (33.3), and points per game (19.7).
Moreover, Lanier was ranked as the most effective offensive player in college basketball last season by the extensively used Synergy Sports service.
Lanier, a Nashville-based high school prospect who was unranked in the 2020 recruiting class out of The Ensworth School, scored 25 or more points eight times and 30 or more points four times during the previous season.
Lanier’s career-best season scoring average was 4.7 points per game before the previous campaign. Compared to the previous three seasons of his college basketball career, Lanier’s performance and playing time skyrocketed last season.
He is a career 86.4% free-throw shooter. Before starting 31 of North Florida’s 32 games under head coach Matthew Driscoll in the previous season, he made a total of 18 starts in the 2020–21, 2021–22, and 2022–23 seasons.
Even prior to his Tennessee transfer portal commitment, Lanier had a busy offseason. Lanier said on March 16 that he would enter the 2024 NBA draft early despite still being eligible to play in his final year of college.
Lanier accessed the transfer portal on April 24. Additionally, he participated in the G League Elite Camp, a two-day event on May 11 and May 12 that provided NBA Draft prospects with an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of front-office officials, coaches, and scouts from both the NBA and NBA G League.
Lanier will play one more season of eligibility before joining Tennessee. As of Friday afternoon, Lanier is ranked as the 323rd overall transfer portal player, according to college basketball statistician Evan Miyakawa. Listed by 247Sports, Lanier rank among top 10 in the transfer portal.
