Rather than celebrate his financial reward, Sørensen chose to redirect it toward helping the most vulnerable across British Columbia and beyond.
“Football has given me so much, but I’m deeply aware that many people in our cities face daily struggles just to survive,” Sørensen said in a club statement. “This is about giving back to the community that has embraced me and doing what I can to help create meaningful change.”
The funds will be distributed among a network of organizations focused on homelessness prevention, emergency housing, food assistance, and mental health support—particularly in Vancouver and surrounding areas where the need has grown significantly in recent years.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC praised their coach’s selfless decision, calling it “a defining example of leadership that reflects the spirit and values of the club.” MLS Commissioner Don Garber also commended Sørensen’s actions, stating that “this kind of humanity is what makes our league stronger on and off the field.”
